This Unit is engaged in the research and development of new methods of diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the ocular surface, cornea and crystalline lens, under the responsibility of Dr. Domenico Schiano Lomoriello.
The Unit is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach to clinical research in ophthalmology, involving the collaboration between ophthalmologists, biologists, geneticists, biomedical engineers and physicists expert in optics and photonics.
The research group "Cornea e Crystalline Lens", coordinated by Dr. Domenico Schiano Lomoriello, carries out research activities at the clinical trial center in Via Livenza and clinical and surgical activities at the operational unit for hospitalization and care of the Presidio Britannico. The group's areas of research are corneal biomechanics, laser-corneal tissue interaction, corneal stem cells, biocompatibility of intraocular lenses, and modern optics.
At the Research Center for Clinical Trials, the Cornea and Crystalline Research Operating Unit has the most advanced diagnostic instrumentation for the front eye segment that includes: ocular aberrometry, corneal aberrometry, corneal topography, corneal tomography, pupillometry, corneal pachymetry, anterior segment OCT, confocal corneal microscopy, viscoelasticity analysis of corneal tissue. A number of clinical and pre-clinical study protocols are currently ongoing for the analysis of corneal response to femtoseconds laser surgery, for the study of corneal cross-linking in keratoconus, and genetic studies of keratoconus and major corneal dystrophy.
A corneal pathology and anterior segment unit (headed by Dr. Domenico Schiano Lomoriello) in agreement with the National Health Service, is active at the Presidio Britannico’s hospitalization and care unit. It is also possible to perform corneal topography, corneal tomography, pupillometry, corneal pachymetry, anterior segment OCT, confocal corneal microscopy. From a surgical point of view, routine cataract and corneal surgery (corneal transplants, lamellar keratoplasty, endothelial keratoplasty) are performed..
