  • From September 1989 to December 1991 research fellowship  at the CNR, Institute of Neurophysiology in Pisa directed by Prof. Lamberto Maffei, carrying out studies on the role of Nerve Growth Factor in plasticity of the visual system

  • 2005-2007, Principal Investigator of the Project of the Ministry of Health “Ricerca Finalizzata”, with the topic: "Potential therapeutic role of Nerve Growth Factor in glaucoma: studies in animal models and humans." This project, lasting 36 months, was completed in 2009 and resulted in qualified scientific papers published on PNAS (2009), Vision Research (2009), Journal of Glaucoma (2011)
  • 2007-2010, Principal Investigator of the Project of the Ministry of Health “Ricerca Finalizzata”, with the topic: "Leber’s optic neuropathy: from the early diagnosis to the rehabilitation". This project, lasting 36 months, was completed in 2009 and resulted in qualified scientific papers published on European Journal of Ophthalmology (2012)  and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science Vision Research (2013).
  • 2012, Principal Investigator of the AIFA project entitled "Evaluation of potential neuroprotective action of minocycline in addition to topical hypotonic therapy for the maintenance of functional impairment of vision in patients with Glaucoma"

  • In 1998 he won the award of the Italian Society of Ophthalmology for clinical research
